Cryptic pregnancy: How does a woman not know she’s pregnant?
For most women the pregnancy experience brings about a huge number of noticeable changes, the most obvious being the belly bump. However, not all women experience the same symptoms (some none at all!), and for overweight women especially the growing baby might not be totally obvious.
About 1 in every 475 pregnancies is a complete surprise until the third trimester or even all the way up until labor. That was the case for Ada Guan who gave birth on a plane on Mother’s Day after having no idea she was pregnant.
Other women have had similar experiences. For example, while you’re breastfeeding your period isn’t regular, so it’s easy to ignore signs of pregnancy. Breastfeeding is not birth control! Pregnancy denial is also a thing, where kicks and morning sickness are simply dismissed as gas and stomach bugs.
