This (Expensive) Bassinet Might Soon Be Free To Some Families, Thanks To The FDA

Bassinets are big business. Ask any mom-to-be what she has on her baby registry, and she’ll likely have some variation of such portable sleepers topping her list. But not all bassinets are created equally- and apparently, the FDA agrees.

The SNOO Smart Sleeper is an automated bassinet that promises to reduce crying, increase sleep, and claims to be the safest sleep-device ever made. This sleeper includes several clever features, such as the “five-second swaddle” that is built into the bassinet, safety clips to ensure your baby doesn’t roll over in the middle of the night and provides a gentle rocking motion at the touch of a button.

Sounds great, right? Well, there is a catch: it currently retails for 1,295.00 USD.

While some people argue that the SNOO is attempting to replace the unreplicable sensation of human touch and parental soothing techniques, others swear by the smart sleeping device. However, with its hefty price tag, it simply isn’t accessible to a large portion of the population. This, however, may soon change. SNOO recently announced that it’s SNOO Smart Sleeper has been accepted into the FDA’s Breakthrough Product Program, which is designed to expedite the review of medical products and make life-saving devices more available to the general population.

According to the Happiest Baby website, approximately 3,600 babies have died in their sleep annually since 1999. In contrast, to date, surveyed babies from families who own or have rented the SNOO have spent over 75,000,000 hours in their smart bassinets without a single injury or death reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. This is tremendous news, especially considering the recent recall of various reclined infant sleepers.

SNOO says that this life-saving device will soon likely be more affordable, if not free through insurance, to more American families, thanks to this much anticipated FDA initiative.

“We hope that—if SNOO receives FDA approval— even more employers, governmental agencies, and insurance companies will cover the cost so that many more parents will be able to experience the safety and peace of mind that SNOO can bring to them.”
