Putting a Price on Childbirth

Childbirth is one of those few, truly beautiful things that people can experience. Every emotion rushes through your head, and one of the single toughest strains the human body can endure gives way to easily one of the most awe-inspiring.

The thought occurred to me a while ago, though, about how much cold, hard cash goes into the beautiful experience.

A recent analysis by the New York Times has found that, on average, vaginal delivery costs around $15,000 and that C-Section will cost double that. Mind you, insurance companies will only pay some of, the bill themselves. Meanwhile, Midwifery Care, has found that birth can range anywhere from $2000 to $4,000, depending on your city.

The depressing this is, around the world, other big name nations (like Britain, France, and Chile) pay almost $5,000 less than Americans do, with better health outcomes for both the baby and mother.

Giving birth is already difficult enough, but it’s upsetting to know that some families don’t get the service they need, or only for an amount they can barely afford.
