Unschooling: A Non-Traditional Method of Learning

The Natural Child Project is an organization that supports a new, non-traditional trend in learning called unschooling. This method allows families to abandon a more structured style of education in favor of self-direction. Unschooling focuses on undertaking educational experiences that support a lifelong interest in learning while supplementing with a traditional school curriculum as needed.

Critics of this method question whether children would use the opportunity for self-directed to truly focus on learning, or just watch television all day. Unschooling coach Laurie Couture cites her experience with her son as an example of how this method keeps distractions away. Each week of unschooling is built around activities such as volunteer work, home-school groups, and exploration. Her son was able to take his interests and experiences as essay topics for his college scholarships so he could continue his education.
