Just Because the Latch “Looks Good” Doesn’t Mean It Is
Babies are made to nurse from their mother’s breast. For some the task is no problem. Nipple meets mouth, a little magic happens, and the baby grows. For others it’s not that easy. If your nipples hurt, your baby isn’t gaining weight, or if your baby can’t stay latched there is a problem that needs addressing, no matter how good the latch looks from the outside.
There are many things that can cause a bad latch. It could be as simple as poor positioning, or it could be more serious. If your baby is tongue-tied he might need a minor surgical procedure to help him nurse. Birth trauma and weak suck can also be corrected.
A poor latch can result in a variety of negative consequences. You may encounter breast infections, low milk supply or engorgement, and your baby could be more gassy and fussy, wean early and fail to gain enough weight.
