Nutrition Tips for Nursing Mamas

Pregnancy & Newborn Magazine recently ran some advice on how to maximize your nutrient intake while nursing. A new mom wrote in asking how to get as much of the good stuff as possible while sleep deprived and short of time to cook homemade healthy meals every day. She was given three important tips on how to get the nutrients needed to be healthy for herself and baby.

There are a few very important points to remember about nutrient needs while nursing. First, nursing moms have an overall increased need for nutrients. You can supplement any gaps in nutrition with a multivitamin, but it is important to get as much from whole foods as possible. Not enough calcium and your body may start leaching calcium from your bones to provide for your baby. Be sure to stock up on leafy greens, low fat dairy, and calcium-enriched foods. Finally, focus on getting enough “good fat” or omega-3 and DHA from sources such as fish and nuts.
