Neglect – When is it Alright to Leave Your Children Alone?
Do you remember being a child, and having to be left alone for a while? Whether it was because your parents had to work or had an errand to run, there were certainly a few times when you were left home alone. But it looks like doing that may now be an illegal offense in some places.
In the United Kingdom last year alone, over five hundred parents were arrested for leaving their children alone in homes and cars, under suspicion of neglect. And parents in America have been arrested for something as seemingly simple as letting their children go to the park.
The immediate fear that sets in when you’re away from your children can be staggering. but there’s a point when they can be trusted to do the right thing, and can be allowed to be on their own. I’ve had to leave my oldest – he’s getting closer and closer to turning eleven – at home alone before, and despite every fear I had, when I returned home? He was eating a fruit by the foot and watching TV.
