Developing Healthy Food Habits for Kids
Kids can be extremely picky eaters. Sometimes it is difficult to get them to try something new, or maybe they just favor the not-so-healthy food. Fortunately, it’s not too late to instill better eating habits. Ally Hirschlag from SheKnows discusses how to get started.
The first tip is also true for any age. If you make healthier food more accessible, the healthy food is what they will reach for. Make eating well a family effort by being a food role model. Make sure they get their vegetables by sneaking them into fruit smoothies. Leafy greens with pineapple and banana make for a tasty treat with a cool color.
Make veggies more exciting with tasty dips, such as hummus or yogurt. Let your kids be involved in the planning of meals to get them excited about what they’re eating. Make sure they know that it’s OK to have the occasional treat, but it’s not a part of the everyday diet. Finally, try not to argue with kids over veggies at mealtimes. If they are hungry enough, they will eat everything on the plate.
