Labor and Delivery: Dispelling the Myths
Bringing a baby into this world might be the most difficult thing you ever do. Everyone you talk to will have advice for you, but there are a lot of myths surrounding childbirth that need to be debunked.
For example, a lot of people believe that once your water breaks it’s a sign labor has begun. Actually, your water could break a few days before you give birth, or not until just before your baby is born. Also, your cervix could start to dilate weeks before labor begins, or labor could begin without any dilation at all. There are no hard and fast rules.
Another common myth is that if labor is induced, you will go into labor immediately. Induction can actually take a long time, and drugs like Pitocin make contractions stronger, resulting in a longer and more painful labor.
