BabyNames.com Makes A Heartfelt Statement In Solidarity With The BLM Movement
There are few pregnancy milestones more profound than selecting the name of your baby. Some families use this as an opportunity to explore their lineage and select an ancestral name rooted in tradition. Meanwhile, others might settle on a name that sparks boundless joy and simply “feels right.”
No matter how you select a name, every mother knows what a sacred experience this can be. That’s because a name is so much more than a carefully curated cluster of phonetically pleasing syllables. To a mother, that name represents a hope, a story, and a prayer for her future child.
In light of the recent activism, outrage, and heartache that has followed the untimely death of George Floyd, there has been an outpouring of support for the Black Lives Matter movement. Although many heartfelt statements have been released by various businesses and institutions, parents-to-be may be surprised to find that even as ostensibly neutral a place as BabyNames.com has weighed in.
In lieu of the traditional press release or social media post, BabyNames.com chose to add a lengthy list of names to their front page; the names of black men and women who have made the news as victims of police brutality and other racially motivated attacks. Above the list is a short message that reads “Each one of these names was somebody’s baby.”
In an interview with the Huffington Post, founder Jennifer Moss released the following statement regarding her decision to showcase and pay tribute to these men and women who lost their lives to heartbreaking acts of violence.
“I saw the names listed on NPR, and they broke my heart. I knew then I wanted to include them in our company’s statement. I am a parent, and it just came from my heart.”
So the next time you’re scrolling on your phone, reading the news or listening to the radio, and you hear the name of another life lost- please stop and let it sink in. Because much like your own children, that name was once a symbol of a new mother’s hope, story, and prayer. It was given to that child with the wildest dreams of a bright future and an existence full of greatness. At the end of the day, none of us name a child with the hopes that it will one day be transformed into another tragic headline.
