The World’s Smallest Baby Boy Is Even More Remarkable Than You Think
The smallest baby boy in recorded history was born in August 2018 in Tokyo. Delivered by Caesarean section 24 weeks into his mother’s pregnancy, he weighed just 9.45 ounces. Only three babies have been born smaller, and they were all girls. As tiny as the baby boy was, many of his organs were well developed, including his brain, heart and lungs. However, he was not able to breath or eat on his own. Happily, after five months of treatment, the boy was discharged from the hospital weighing a healthy seven pounds.
Key Takeaways:
- The world’s smallest surviving baby boy was born in Tokyo in 2018, at 24 weeks, weighing just 9 ounces.
- The baby needed five months of treatment before going home with his family.
- While most premature babies are born underdeveloped (which is why they often don’t survive), this baby has unusually well-developed organs and bodily systems, leading to his survival.
“”In these cases of extremely early [birth] or extremely small children, girls are a little more developed than boys,” Bell said, and that gives baby girls a slight survival advantage. “More boys are born, but more girls survive.””
