In almost 50 percent of families, moms are the breadwinners
A study by The Center of American Progress found that nearly half of working mothers make up the majority of their family’s income and that about a quarter of working mothers are responsible for twenty-five to half of their family’s income. Furthermore, working mothers who are the primary source of income for their families are more likely to be Latina and black while only a third of these mothers were white.
Key Takeaways:
- The fact that so many black and Latina mothers are sole breadwinners compared to white mothers is a clear sign of the institutional racism that the United States continues to struggle with.
- Another 22.4 percent were co-breadwinners, responsible for 25 percent to 49 percent of all earnings.
- The report found some interesting differences based on geography, race and age. White women, for example, are the least likely to be the primary breadwinner when compared to black and Latina mothers.
