Punishing Parents for Letting Kids Play Outside has to Stop
In the last few months, I’ve brought you a lot of stories of parents being caught in legal trouble when they let their children play outside. It’s something I’ve thought a lot about with my children, and how important it is them for you enjoy the outside world, despite what other parents say.
And it’s why it’s so nice to see other parents just as tired of the phenomenon as me. Charlie Brooks with babycenter Blog agrees with me, pointing to some of the most ridiculous cases that have recently happened.
In his own words, “I’m sick of hearing about how today’s kids don’t play outside enough but also hearing an increasing number of reports where parents run the risk of losing their kids because they trusted them to play safely. We can’t have it both ways, and not allowing kids out of our sight poses a greater long-term risk. The odds of a kid getting lost, injured, or kidnapped while playing in their own backyard are negligible. The greater danger posed to our kids is childhood obesity… The way to reduce this is to get kids outside, but our society is making that harder than ever.”
