The Problem With Hearing Your Daughter Called a One-Ton Princess
Kelly Wilbanks is a writer with babycenter Blog and mother to a beautiful daughter, Vivianne. During a recent family event to celebrate Easter, both mother and daughter were having a wonderful time, until she sat with her Great Uncle.
With nothing but the best intentions, we’re sure, he playfully referred to her as a one-ton princess. And while Vivianne, only three and blissfully unaware of the power words can have, didn’t notice the comment… her mother did.
The comment hit Kelly hard. it left her reeling, because, “He didn’t say it in a mean way. My daughter didn’t catch that she’d been inadvertently slammed for her size. But, I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to draw my blissfully unaware daughter’s attention to the matter… It’s a challenge that all moms face. I don’t know how to keep my daughter feeling safe and secure in her body. Period. No matter what anyone says or doesn’t say. I can’t control people. I can’t control how my daughter interprets their actions. I can’t control bullies online or in the classroom some day. I can’t even control the random comment from an Uncle I know loves and cares about her.”
