A is for Apple, I is for ISIS
A first year teacher in Utah presented her ninth grade students with an assignment meant to help them learn and understand the goals of terrorist propaganda. Unfortunately, the project has come under fire, and with understandable reason – the assignment was for the students to make their own propaganda posters, for groups such as ISIS.
Now, in complete fairness, the teacher included a clause in the assignment that said any student uncomfortable with the assignment could instead do an alternative, which is the completely right thing to do. But some parents still complained about the touchy subject matter, and the school has ultimately decided to pull the assignment completely.
To be honest? I think this is an interesting assignment to present to our ninth graders. By then, it’s important for them to understand the world around them and how people operate in completely different places, with radically different ideas and motives.
