I Don’t Know, to be Honest
Well, Duke University has the scariest news of the day pretty well locked down.
A new study from the University has found links between levels of in infants TDCIPP and TPHP (two chemicals known for leading to cancer and hormone disruption) and a variety of every day objects that contain the chemicals. In fact, researchers have pointed to car seats, nursery gliders, bassinets, and various other baby products that contain the chemical. The study even found that babies with more baby products in their home had higher amounts of the metabolite in them. Unfortunately, it’s not a cut and dry, black and white sort of situation
The chemicals have been found to be a component in making these things fire-retardant).
This is sort of a scary, two sided coin. It’s prudent to take the consideration of safety into account (flame-retardant will always be better than not flame-retardant). But knowing the potential damage these products might do in the long run is just as frightening. It comes down to the parent, and it’s a tough question. I’m honestly not sure, myself.
If you’re curious, here’s the Center for Environmental Health’s chart of baby items that contain flame-retardants.
