Note to Self: Don’t Send Any More Notes
Back before cell phones, the only way to secretly communicate during class (wow that’s taking me back) was to pass a note. And not every love note came back with an “x” in the box you were hoping for. But one Florida boy got worse than just a rejection.
According to his mother, the school threatened the boy with sexual harassment charges if he attempts to send the girl another love note. And though that sounds like a ridiculous thing to happen to a lovestruck little boy, it’s the right decision to make. Megan Zander with sheknows speaks about teaching our children the importance of consent and restraint, to combat a culture that focuses much too often on male characters “winning” a woman who didn’t want him.
It’s embarrassing for the boy, and no, it never feels good to have your heart broken. But he’s been given a chance to learn an important lesson, about respecting limits and knowing to reel it in. Besides, everyone gets their heart broken, and should too. It’s a lesson we should try to teach a bit more often.
