They say everything changes when you have a baby, and that’s also true for your brain. From pregnancy onward, neurological changes happen in a mother’s brain that lead to emotional changes that determine how we bond with our children. Learning more about how these changes happen could also help us understand why some women suffer from post-partum depression.
Research shows that a mother’s brain grows and develops in several areas that have to do with empathy, emotion regulation, and motivation. The amygdala plays a large role, and researchers believe that growth in this region is what leads to protectiveness and sensitivity to the needs of our children. Conversely, a lack of growth could lead to depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive behaviors.
