Pediatricians caution against marijuana use by children
With marijuana legalized in two states and gaining a medical following across the country, some important considerations are being made concerning its use by minors and children. Research shows that while the substance probably isn’t harmful for adults, it does cause problems for children and should only be used as a medication for debilitating illnesses.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recently updated its position on marijuana. They’re calling for decriminalization to decrease penalties and prevent criminal charges from having a negative impact on the lives of youth, especially minorities. They believe it should not be a criminal justice system issue, but something to be controlled by the health system.
Impaired short-term memory, decreased concentration and problem solving, and a change in motor control are some of the effects marijuana can have on a young brain. Research shows that youth who use the substance heavily have abnormal brain development. Many more studies need to be done.
It is also recommended that parents do not use marijuana around their kids.
