The 5 worst (and 3 best!) pets for small kids that aren’t cats or dogs
Cats and dogs are typically the most popular pets we can think of, but some families, especially those with young children, might prefer to choose a pet that is smaller and less high maintenance. Parents of young, animal-loving children, who desperately want a pet but are either not interested in or not ready to care for a cat or dog, should know that some pets work better for young kids than others. Ferrets and small rodents, like mice, gerbils, and hamsters, are surprisingly high-maintenance. Birds are noisy and delicate. Reptiles and amphibians present a number of issues, not the least of which is salmonella. Rabbits are terrified of people. However, fish, rats, and guinea pigs all make excellent pets for young kids.
