Cats and dogs are typically the most popular pets we can think of, but some families, especially those with young children, might prefer to choose a pet that is smaller and less high maintenance. Parents of young, animal-loving children, who desperately want a pet but are either not interested in or not ready to care for a cat or dog, should know that some pets work better for young kids than others. Ferrets and small rodents, like mice, gerbils, and hamsters, are surprisingly high-maintenance. Birds are noisy and delicate. Reptiles and amphibians present a number of issues, not the least of which is salmonella. Rabbits are terrified of people. However, fish, rats, and guinea pigs all make excellent pets for young kids.
