Sandbox sand containing micro-crystalline silica can be hazardous to your child’s health. The dust from the sand will become air borne and when breathed in by a child can lead to major health problems in the future. Rather than using toxic sand box sand containing micro-crystalline silica, choose safer alternatives such as pea gravel, crushed walnuts or rice to name a few. If these items are too expensive and parents find themselves forced to use sandbox sand, they can dampen the sand to reduce the amount of dust that rises. Parents should also keep the sandbox covered to prevent pests from entering and further contaminating the sand.
