How to raise a kid who cares

Resized_18002320_s_colorThe goal of parenting is to raise a child so they can become a happy, successful, caring adult. That’s a pretty noble idea, but the task can seem daunting. How do you make sure your child doesn’t grow up to be self-absorbed or cold-hearted? The answer is easier than you think, and it all starts by practicing what you preach.

Teaching your children social awareness and how it’s important to care for others doesn’t mean you have to put in 20 hours of volunteer work every week. It’s the little every day things you do that make the difference. Simple things like recycling or turning lights off to save energy are a great start to a conversation about doing something to contribute to a greater good.

You can also participate in charity drives and donations to show how good it feels to give something you enjoyed for a while to someone else who will enjoy it too. If a friend or relative is on hard times, cook a meal with your child and deliver it together.

Reinstate these ideas with bedtime story books that feature good deeds and helpful themes, and watch your child grow up with strong values and a kind heart.
